The Journey — Memory Care by BHI

Memory loss is life-changing for all involved, and witnessing a battle with dementia can be both heartbreaking and scary. The decision to move your loved one to Memory Care may feel equally difficult, which is why, as part of our full continuum of health care services, BHI communities offer The Journey.

The Journey is a highly customized Memory Support program for residents who have Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive decline (dementia), or other forms of memory loss. With a unique approach to Memory Support, The Journey could well be the greatest gift you give your loved one facing memory challenges.

For people living with dementia, small moments matter. We help our residents maintain their identity and sense of self through individualized programming based on their talents, interests and areas of expertise. In-depth interviews are conducted with family members prior to their loved one moving to memory care. This allows us to learn about your loved one’s life, career, hobbies, preferences, etc., and create a comprehensive personal care plan. Knowing and being present with your loved one gives us a solid foundation to help anticipate their needs. Whenever possible, the same care associates are assigned to the same resident to build relationships based on trust and loving concern.

Our nurturing staff members have at least 30 hours of specialized training in caring for individuals with memory loss, including a dementia simulation process to help better understand the progression of the disease. We provide ongoing medication review and dementia progression evaluations to ensure we meet your loved one exactly where they are based on their changing needs. We also offer the peace-of-mind of knowing that trained staff is on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to be alerted to an emergency.

The Journey provides Montessori-based dementia programming, which emphasizes the use of each resident’s unique capabilities, the ability to improve with practice, and the need for as much independence as possible. Through thoughtful preparation, we help residents engage in purposeful and meaningful activity, and to have social roles within a community. The Montessori approach has been proven to reduce anxiety for people with memory loss by providing engaging and therapeutic activities that they find rewarding. We offer sensory experiences through music therapy and physical activities designed to reconnect your loved one with pleasant events of the past and to re-experience the accompanying positive emotions.

Our goal in offering The Journey is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with memory loss, as well as their caregivers. We understand that when you become a caregiver, it can seem unimaginable to accept outside help. The Journey views caring for your family member as a partnership. We stand beside you and your loved one to provide the support that will allow you to reclaim your role as spouse or family member. Families are welcome to visit anytime and are always invited to join their family members for meals. Click here to learn more about our family-style dining and its many benefits.
